Biography of Frank Bruno of Monterey California

Frank Bruno, who during the past eleven years has been accorded a profitable patronage as a dealer in cigars, and soft drinks in Monterey, has been honored with the presidency of the Americanization Society of the city and is indeed a loyal son of his adopted land. A native of Italy, he was born on the 17th of January, 1883, his parents being Vincento and Jennie Bruno. The father came to the United States and to California about the year 1880, locating first in Pittsburg. This place had been formerly known as Black Diamond and here it was that many fishermen from across the sea took up their abode on emigrating to America, fishing in the waters of the Sacramento river. Vincento Bruno later removed to Monterey and thence returned to Italy. The mother of Frank Bruno is deceased.

The early educational privileges which Frank Bruno enjoyed were afforded by the schools of his native Italy, where he spent the first twelve years of his life. In this country he studied diligently to perfect himself in the English language and he has become a well informed man of broad general knowledge. For a number of years following his arrival in the United States he spent the summer months in Alaska, where he was engaged in the fishing industry, returning to California each year to pass the winter seasons in the city of Pittsburg. During the past eleven years, as above stated, he has engaged in the sale of cigars and soft drinks in Monterey and has built up a large and steady patronage that has insured his success.

In early manhood Mr. Bruno was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Lauro, of Italy. They are the parents of two daughters: Jennie and Rosalie.

Mr. Bruno gives his political allegiance to the republican party and is widely recognized as a public-spirited, enterprising and respected citizen. He has exerted a beneficial influence among the Italian-speaking people of his community, teaching them the principles of the American constitution and instilling in their minds high ideals of citizenship. Hunting and motoring afford him pleasurable recreation.
