George B. Katzenstein

George B. Katzenstein, born on November 28, 1848, in New Orleans, Louisiana, significantly contributed to California’s business and agricultural development. His family relocated to California in 1853, where his father ran a hotel in Marysville. Educated in Marysville, George later moved to Sacramento, working in insurance and fraternal organizations. He co-founded the Orange Vale Colonization Company, promoting fruit cultivation in northern California. Katzenstein also managed the Sacramento and northern California business for the Earl Fruit Company and became a key figure in the California Fruit Distributors. Married to Ida M. Richards in 1869, he was active in various fraternal organizations and the Republican Party.

Charles J. Heggerty, a distinguished lawyer from San Francisco, was born on December 27, 1860, in Smartsville, Yuba County, California. His parents, Morris Heggerty and Mary O’Donnell, were Irish immigrants who settled in Yuba County in the mid-19th century. After being orphaned at 14, Charles pursued education at St. Mary’s College in San Francisco, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1880. He studied law with prominent attorneys and was admitted to the California bar in 1889. Heggerty gained prominence through significant cases, including those involving hydraulic mining rights and the extensive Fair estate litigation. He married Annie M. Cashin in 1890.

Dr. George Woodward Dufficy, born in Marysville, California, in 1871, is a prominent physician in Sacramento. He descends from pioneer families, with his mother, Edwina (O’Brien) Dufficy, arriving in California in 1849, and his father, Michael C. Dufficy, an Irish immigrant and lawyer turned merchant. George graduated from St. Ignatius College and the University of California’s medical department in 1898. He initially served as resident physician at Sisters Hospital in Sacramento before establishing a successful private practice. In 1901, he married Evelyn Rackliffe, daughter of former state treasurer Levi Rackliffe. Dr. Dufficy is active in local medical societies and the Democratic Party.
